Fleetwood MY&PBC are pleased to announce that they will be holding a 6mR Open Meeting on Sunday 25th August 2019. This event does not appear in the MYA events listings but has been encouraged following the response of participants to the April event at the club. It will take the form of a one day meeting to be held at the club waters with plenty of racing on the day at one of the premier venues in the country, providing the opportunity for a shakedown prior to the 6mR Nationals . More details will follow in due course.

Harwich & Dovercourt club have changed the date of The Tomlinson Vase and Eastern District Championship to be held at their water. It will now take place on Saturday 29th of June, rather than Sunday 30th June as previously published. An NOR will appear shortly. Entries are now being accepted for the 2019 Nationals at Dartmoor in September. The NOR and Entry system can be found on the MYA website via the news or calendar sections. Fleetwood is pleased to welcome one of its members into the 6mR fleet. Mike and Sue Parkington actively travel and sail various other classes of radio yachts including RG65, Dragonforce/Flite, IOM and more but Mike has hankered after something that reflects his full-size small keel boat experience. Mike and Sue came to watch the recent Fleetwood open meeting and were attracted by what they saw, resulting in Mike acquiring GBR 1098, a Rococo, from Stephen Hodgkinson who in turn is about to launch a new Romanza. We look forward to seeing both boats on the water this summer. It's all systems go on the first weekend in May.
We have two open meetings to go to with the first being on Saturday 4th down at Dartmoor where they are holding the SW District Championship. It's a chance to sail at the venue for the National Championship in September on a water with open aspects. Then on Sunday 5th we have the first round of the 2002 Trophy in the form of the Shearwater Trophy open meeting at the Broads club; an amiable venue and you can have a dinner at half time! A good enjoyable sail is to be had whichever place you go to. Of course you could do both...........there is someone intending to do just that ! See the competitions tab for Notice of Race and enter on the MYA site or email direct. The next open meeting on the calendar is fast approaching!
This will be the first radio 6mR open meeting be held at the Fleetwood lake and provides a great opportunity for skippers to enjoy sailing their six metres on a piece of water that allows boats to be put through their paces with longer tacks held and proper strategy and tactics to the fore. The aim of the weekend is to get boats on the water and racing. If it's a Six Metre and it basically complies with the rules then we want it there! There will be participants present who can help with aspects of the rules and give advice regarding compliance. Get in contact with Shaun if you think you might want to enter but are unsure about your boat. On Saturday there will be an optional practice/tuning session with the opportunity for some informal races too. In the evening we will be meeting up for a meal and socialising, anticipated to be at the fabled 'Mount'. Sunday will be race day proper. Shaun Holbeche has details of discounted hotel accommodation that is available in Fleetwood if you want to do both days and/or not be travelling on Sunday morning. Entry can be made via the MYA entry system here Alternatively you can email Shaun Holbeche. The Notice of Race can be found here When we said that Frank Russell's six metre design was receiving it's finishing touches we were not quite sure what that would mean in terms of timescale to completion and release to the wider world.
Well we have not been kept waiting! Frank now has his Cerebus six metre plan available to download from his website here http://www.frankrusselldesign.com/plans/. It looks relatively conventional, relying on detail, as do most metre designs these days, in order to achieve it's goals. It displaces a design weight of 11.75 Kg and will provide a refreshing alternative to the established designs out there. The prolific Australian model yacht designer Frank Russell has announced that he has a new RC Six Metre design under development for the UK market. Frank has produced many designs in almost all the recognised classes including A, 10R, M, and IOM so it's fitting that he should be interested in this longstanding development class.
The design is at the 'finishing touches' stage so we anticipate it will be published later this year. Should be worth the wait. The lines images below gives a flavour of the project: A reminder that the first open event of the year takes place this coming Sunday, 10th February at Bournville. It is the first meeting in the Midland Region 6mR champion skipper series, but is open to all-comers to sail in, not just midland club members. Lets get the season off to a good start!
If you haven't already entered then you should go to the MYA website and enter there. The weather/wind forecast is very promising. Someone's been busy over the past months. A new Six Metre made it's maiden voyage this week as Paul Risdale launched his latest creation at Two Islands, a 'Sisken' design from the Lewis stable, wooden planked with aluminium spars. Paul reports that it 'seemed reasonably well balanced so the mast is in the right place.
A gentle breeze with few gusts but the gusts just heeled the boat – no great changes in course. The rudder is very powerful – I need to reduce the throw or make a smaller rudder. It tacked cleanly (they always do when you are not in a race....)'. Nice work Paul. We look forward to seeing it racing soon. |
