Measurement & Registration
This is a slightly edited and modified version of the MYA version applicable to the 6 Metre Class only.
Measurement and Registration of yachts are the stepping stones to fair and competitive racing. Until these steps are executed, your fellow competitors cannot know that your yacht conforms to the same rules as their own. CLASS RULES - WHY BOTHER? |
|
To most newcomers to the sport, and to many others, our Class Rule may appear unnecessarily complicated and lengthy. However, the Class Rule contains no more than is necessary to ensure that the Rule defines the parameters within which the yacht may be designed and constructed. From time to time it is necessary to amend and upgrade the Class Rule. Such amendments to the Class Rule normally serve to protect existing yachts and the interests of their owners.
MEASUREMENT - WHY AND HOW?
The MYA approves and appoints Official Measurers. The measurement process is often lengthy and some Measurers have a nominal fee for this service. The 6M Class requires sophisticated measuring equipment, which the Measurer and/or his Club have purchased and/or built. The Measurers task is made considerably easier if the yacht closely conforms to the Rule before it is presented to him/her. (Yes, we do have have Ladies who measure). A printable copy of the Class Rule is available from this Web Site in PDF format. When the Measurer is satisfied that the yacht complies with the Class Rule he/she will issue a completed set of Measurement Forms which will be checked by the Class Registrar before an endorsed certificate is issued. Please note that any material alteration to a yacht or its rigging will probably require checking, or in extreme cases, re-measurement. If in doubt, check with a Measurer.
The MYA approves and appoints the Class Registrar. The Class Registrar is responsible for the issue of unique registration numbers. (Numbers are only reserved for one year). Checking measurement forms and issuing authorised certificates, and maintaining a register of all yachts in the Class comprising basic yacht details, measurement forms and copy Certificates.
HOW TO REGISTER YACHTS.
A: FOR NEW YACHTS.
1. Obtain a Registration Number from the Class Registrar. See the contacts section of this site. Or, refer to the MYA Year Book for name, address and telephone number. This can be done by telephone or by sending an SAE. Numbers will only be reserved for one year. If after that time a registration certificate has not been issued, the number will be re-allocated.
2. Make an appointment with your chosen Official Measurer to have the yacht measured. If it rates correctly he/she will complete the measurement forms and documents. Please note that the Official Measurer may charge a fee for this service.
3. Send the complete set of original forms and documents, plus a complete set of photo copies, and a stamped self addressed envelope to the Class Registrar. You are advised to keep photo copies of all posted documents for you own security, as a precaution against the envelope being lost in the post. Also ensure that the correct postage is applied.
4. The Class Registrar will check the measurement forms and documents and, if they are correct, will retain the photo copies and return the stamped and authorised documents in the stamped self addressed envelope provided.
B: FOR PREVIOUSLY REGISTERED YACHTS.
1. If a yacht has been altered it must be re-measured by an Official Measurer. Use steps 2 to 4 as above.
C: CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP.
1. Complete the original Certificate CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP section, or if there isn't one obtain a Change of Ownership declaration form from your measurer. Send the originals and photo copies together with a stamped self addressed envelope to the Class Registrar. The Class registrar will check and authorise the documentation and return the original.
Please don't forget the stamped self addressed envelope for the Registrar.
