Well today was the initial round of the new Midland District six metre series. On arrival various tales of preparing C suits were heard but the weather was much kinder, varying from light winds to top of A suit.
There were some incidents, mostly at the start, with 11 six metres contesting one half of the start line and the varying wind direction meant most of the penalty turns were on the first leg.
The sailing was in general of a high standard, the gains and losses being mainly on the windward legs. It did seem most of the time the clubhouse side of the lake was preferred, but to take advantage of this side you needed to be in your own space. If you were in a gaggle of yachts the calls for water to tack off the bank were interesting and definitely slowed you down.
Mark Dicks sailed a very good series, with Shaun Holbeche taking over the lead when Mark made a mistake, and following them round for most of the time was Mike Ewart. There were some yacht problems mostly minor damage in collisions, so the fleet performed well after the winter break it bodes well for the rest of the series.
Many thanks to our PRO John Burgoine and our scorer and observer Gordon Sears, and last but by no means least the lady with the tea. Mike Ewart. Series Trustee.
