Saturday 8th October.
The weekend saw 11 skippers gather at Bournville RS&MBC for the 2022 MYA 6M National Championship under the stewardship of Peter Moore. The Saturday results were to form the final round of this year’s Midland District 6M Champion Skipper series. The day started with wind down the length of the Bournville lake and looking at the results it showed that Peter and the skippers managed to get 14 races in by the end of the day. These first day results were sent to me and overnight I did the National Championship interim results, and the combined series results ready to crown the new, or should I say defending champion on Sunday along with the National title winner. Mick Barnett not only sailed the event but acted as quartermaster all weekend and the skippers were treated to teas and coffee with cake and biscuits from the galley on Saturday prepared by Elaine. Here is a small selection of pictures by Peter Moore who managed to grab these between his race committee duties. Sunday 9th October. I had been invited along to help with race scoring and anything else needed on the Sunday, so having arrived early we greeted the skippers back to flat calm conditions and what wind there was blowing from over the clubhouse. A couple of brave souls put their boats on the water and there was movement but from a difficult direction. Peter M said that he would layout a zig-zag course starting in the bay then around leeward, windward, buoys in the middle of the lake to the same at the far end of the lake. Then back to the start marks and windwards towards the access bridge in the bay for a finish line. Sounds complicated when you try to write it but in practice it worked out OK. The first races were fairly long due to the lack of wind and so Peter M took out the middle beat, which helped things somewhat. By the time we got back to the water after the first tea break things were looking up, the wind had increased slightly and so a second lap was instigated. Peter carried on with this course until lunchtime, and once we were gathered for the final few races the wind had almost but not quite resumed its direction of down the middle of the lake, which allowed for a far end start line. After 10 races today, and 24 for the weekend it was decided that it was time to pack up. Finish line duties were ably done by Nick Probyn. So, with the scores calculated we gathered in the clubhouse for the prize giving. The MYA 6M National Champion for 2022 was Shaun Holbeche sailing a Ravenna, his score was 26 points from 24 races after 4 discards. Followed by John Burgoine in second with 46 points, and third John Sharman with 70 points. The National Trophy was presented by Peter Moore. As I mentioned earlier this event also formed the final round of the Midland District 6M Champion Skipper series and the winner of that was Shaun Holbeche with a perfect score of 300 points from the four rounds including a discard. In fact, his discard was also 100 points so in effect he won every race this series. So, congratulations once again to Shaun. Gordon Sears |
