John Lewis Six Metre Designs
John Lewis was a prolific designer of many classes of Model Yacht, a number of his designs were one offs for individuals and most of his works are available in two volumes of A4 drawings and details. Available from sailsetc The Six Metre Class is trying to make available as many of Johns designs in full size format as a Back Catalogue, hopefully we will be able to make these available to purchase shortly. If you have plans for any of the designs listed below or other John Lewis designs we would be most pleased to hear from you. ________________________________________________________________________________________ |
BOURNEVILLE (1988)
LOA 62.5 inches LWL 39 inches Displacement 23.6 lbs sail Area 1160 sq inches Design features a bow bustle |
This is an example of the only six metre out of many I have built that failed to rate as John wanted. After discussion with John I destroyed the boat and drawing, John also withdrew the plans from availability. I now wish I had those drawings as I believe it was one of the most elegant of Johns designs, short waterline, long overhangs and a narrow hull of light dislacement. i think with a bit of adjustment this boat could rate as John wanted. |
SIX METRE DESIGN FOR JOHN GALE (1988)
LOA 65 inches LWL 42 inches Displacement 28.66 lbs Sail Area 1003 sq inches |
"This was a design for the late John Gale specifically and unusually for Vane Sailing although I seem to remember John also sailed it under radio, features a bow bustle." |
FLAIR (1989) John designed this for himself.
LOA 62.5 inches LWL 41 inches Displacement 26.75 lbs Sail Area 1084 sq inches |
"Similar hull form to the design for John Gale with bow bustle and a little more sail area for radio." |
PETREL (design 1990)
LOA 57 inches LWL 41 inches Displacement 26.6 lbs Sail Area 1216 sq inches (A single large blueprint) |
Plans still available from Model Boats Plans Service. A good light airs boat and I still have one! |
TERN (design 1990)
LOA 61 inches LWL 41 inches Displacement 27.25 lbs Sail area 1158 sq inches (A single large blueprint) |
A better design than Petrel in heavier air. |
MEHALAH (design 1992) design for Alan Bright
LOA 55.3 inches LWL 43 inches Displacement 30.46 lbs Sail Area 1133 sq inches (A single large blueprint) |
This was a custom design for myself that arose from a conversation with John about how far the LWL could be pushed in the class and still have a competitive boat. I have the only set of drawings and just one boat has to date been built by myself. I sold it last year to a fellow Broads RYC member and it continues to perform well, especially in strong winds. |
LIMITED EDITION (1993)
LOA 63.85 inches LWL 41.5 inches Displacement 28.26 lbs Sail Area 1002 sq inches |
Design features a bow bustle |
SISKIN (design 2000) design for Peter Salt

Increases waterline length as hull heels. This will be my next boat, start building in the new year! |
JEWEL (2002)

I would personally love to get my hands on the full size drawings for this boat, it looks like its name a real jewel! |
