The resurgence of the 6 Metre class in general is being reflected in the uptake in the North of England centered around the Fleetwood club.
Starting from a lowly base of two owners the fleet has gradually developed despite the disruption caused by covid. In the latest development John Sharman has now acquired a Ravenna design which had been languishing un-sailed and will now be brought back into the fleet. John intends to sail both at Fleetwood and at other clubs events and is a welcome recruit to the fleet as a whole. The addition of John and his boat now brings the Fleetwood flotilla up to eight owner-members, plus John Taylor who is 'between boats' at the moment. ( Does a new Six metre design beckon we wonder? ) We also have a club owned 6m, a 'classic' Psyche' design and access to other Sixes owned by members. Members have found the Fleetwood water provides a great 'playground' where these boats can show off their potential to great effect. With the relaxation in covid rules and the prospect of everyone approaching more normal activity levels we hope to welcome owners from other clubs to our open meetings to sample the great sailing venue that Fleetwood is. A reminder that the Shearwater Trophy, the first open 6m event of the season and the first in the 2002 Trophy series is being held this coming Sunday, 23rd May at the Norwich club waters: Visitor Centre Whitlingham Lane, Trowse Norwich, Norfolk NR14 8TR Entries are into double figures but more skippers are most welcome to join in. Please enter via the MYA Events page or directly to: [email protected] Entry is now available for the first open event of the season, The Shearwater Trophy, to take place on Sunday 23rd May 2021.
This years event is being hosted by the Norwich club at the venue for the forthcoming Nationals, Whitlingham Broad, at Whitlingham Country Park, Trowse, Norwich, NR14 8TR. The Notice of Race and entry is available on the MYA website here Dates for the Midland District Champion Skipper League have now been published on the website here.
The best three of four days will count and the winner will become 6m Midland District Champion. Fleetwood's Six Metre fleet got onto the water at last for some club sailing on Sunday 18th after missing out on lockdown restrictions being lifted by one day, back at the end of March.
Some owners had previous commitments and obligations but we managed to get 5 boats on the water and had a very pleasant days sailing and generated some interest in the class too. At least one member is actively looking for a Six. It would have been nice to have had outside visitors able to sail with us but covid rules meant it was not to be. Next time hopefully! On Friday club member Steve Mattison had received his new acquisition, a Renaissance. Set up and tweeking, with the help of other skippers on the Friday and Sunday produced a boat that showed much promise with a good turn of speed, so much so that Steve won the final race of the day to finish off a most enjoyable Wyre Trophy event, won by Shaun Holbeche. We now look forward to future events at Fleetwood and around the circuit this summer and beyond. The 6m website now has a 'WANTED' page for those wishing to acquire a boat or related equipment. There are two prospective skippers already looking so if you have a 6m that you are no longer sailing and wish to move on then take a look.
The Open Events page is also being kept updated as we hear of changes. The Shearwater Trophy event has moved to May 27th - see the Events page for details. The calendar for 2021 is now on the website. It is incomplete at present as we await firm details from some clubs.
It is of course subject to restrictions and regulations relating to covid-19. The first open of the year has already fallen but hopefully prospects will improve the further into the year we proceed. Cross fingers! I have recently received a note from Clive Cooper who is the Club Captain for the Springbok Model Boat Club based near the Surrey/Sussex border south of Guildford.
He tells me that Springbok is more a recreational boating club than a racing one but do have fleets of IOM, 65 and 95’s. Of greater interest though is: 'A number of our members have developed an interest in the 6M and we currently have 4 in the club. We meet every week but once a month we will have a scale sail day where we could do some informal racing if we have sufficient interest. More information on the club is on our website:' http://www.springbokmodelboatclub.com/index.asp It's always good to hear of a club taking up the class and it seems they have made a good start getting a fleet up and sailing. We would love to see them participate away from home and pay them a visit to their waters too! We wish them all the best. Smartwinch UK has an announcement regarding 12.7mm carbon groovy masts. Take a look in the 'Suppliers' section for details.
